My Favorite MacBook Surprises
As some of you know, I recently purchased a brand new MacBook. I was forced to buy a PC when I entered college because of the rules at the University of Texas. I have purchased two since high school graduation, one HP and one Compaq. Yes, same company now, but it didn’t used to be that way.
I loved both latops and still have both to this day (one is defunct because of a mishap with a coworker, they broke it and never fixed it) but I yearned to go back to my Mac roots.
So I have my bright shiny new Mac. I thought I would spend months getting used to it again, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t weeks or months, just days. I am back to being a Mac (sorry Mel and Jeremiah, but I love Apple). Here are the things that surprised me the most.
- Programmable track pad … aka I can use right click!
- Command+Tab is the same position as a PC to switch between programs
- Multiple finger scroll is so easy, I now try to do it on PCs by accident
- Setting up stuff like printers and email is beyond easy
- iTunes integration and sound system is awesome
There are some downsides that I am still getting used to, especially with Office for Mac.
- Can’t tab between multiple windows in one program ex. browers and word/excel/powerpoint files (UPDATE: someone showed me the command+` thing)
- No print screen button (but I know the command now)
- Need adapter for LCD monitors
- Saving to a specific folder is kind of annoying unless recently used
- No Internet Explorer or Chrome (cough Google — cough Microsoft)
There are more ups and downs but these are my favorite. People ask how I’m liking it all the time and I love it. It still takes getting used to, but I am not sure I’ll ever change again. Now I have to get around to loading XP … for those things I can’t have on Mac OS X. ![]()

Thanks for the write-up. I’m in the process of deciding about the big jump from PC to Apple.
It sounds like you are going to do a dual boot with Windows XP. I don’t want Vista, so the Mac OS X has been on my radar.
Nice summary!
