What are "ARC" charges? It appears that this is a "made up" charge that allows XO to put more money into their pocket. I cannot find any authority for this charge. They say it is based upon a mandated tariff by the PUC-but I can't find the tariff issued by the PUC that permits this charge. And to make things even more one sided, if i want to sue XO for overcharging, there is a clause in their contract that only allows the lawsuit to be filed in the state of Virginia. Not very convenient for non-Virginia state customers! I wonder if the Virginia customers contract states that if they want to bring a lawsuit against XO, they can only file it in California.

Companies like XO Communications make big money from people ignorance. They WANT to make it impossible for both customers and the developers they hire to properly optimize a website. It's all about squeezing out every dime possible from their clients, and shutting out the competition; SEO firms and web developers.

Hi. Thanks. It's amazing that they have never fixed this issue.
As for HostGator, I've never had any issues with them and smaller sites, but not sure about higher volume. I've never needed to talk to them yet, which is good in my book. :)

Ha! Hi Kate. I've got a client using XO and I was thinking, "surely I'm not the only one who thinks this sucks?". Bam! Here you are.

I know this is a year old but I'm still forwarding it to my client.

BTW - Would you still recommend HostGator? I've had a helluva time with them, too. Slllloooooow.

"The .htaccess file has to be in a UNIX format. Windows formats a text file with a line feed and a carriage return while UNIX formats the end of a file with only a line feed. For example, if you create an .htaccess file in Notepad and upload it to the server you are sure to get a parsing error."

Are you serious?? What kind of retarded servers are you guys running?

mod_rewrite isn't enabled and I have to use some special editor to create my .htaccess file?

If your an XO hosting customer, I suggest moving to a good host like GoDaddy that doesn't make you jump through these ridiculous hoops. I can easily setup a Linux hosting plan, create my (standard) .htaccess file in whatever text editor I choose and upload it. And guess what? It just works.

Hi Rusty,

I've actually used test environments before, but the test environment would just have shown me what the live record did, the htaccess would not work and XO would not help without paying their SEOs. I am not a developer by any means, never said I was, but I did ask for help and got none in return. Please consider this before you start throwing insults to someone you know nothing about. And SEM = search engine marketing, which is someone versed in code and marketing. If you mean PPC, I have been working in SEO for years and that is my primary job now.

Have a great day!

Kate

It's something called a testing environment. Figure out what works and what breaks on a NON live site before tinkering with what is live. Guess that's what you get when you have someone who's more involved with SEM than actual web development. Maybe you should of consulted with someone who knows what they're doing.

Thank you for posting the link to the plug-in! IT WORKED! I was in trouble until i found this blog. I can't believe XO doesn't offer better support for the most widely used web developing software to date. I also got the runaround from the support XO team saying they could only help out for a *fee*. This is unacceptable in my opinion.

For people who use Word Press at XO, there is a a plug-in to patch the endless redirects their server delivers when you upgrade to WP 3.0.4.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/permalink-fix-disable-canonical-redirects-pack/

"This plugin makes WordPress' default permalinks behavior work on the Concentric/XO Communications shared hosting platform. (concentric.com/xo.com)?
